WWII Service Flag Dedication Nov. 11, 1942.
The dedication of the Teachers College Service Flag will be held Wednesday Nov. 11 at 10:00 o'clock at the regular assembly. This flag is made for service men who have attended the Teachers College and there is a star for every one on the flag.
The program for the dedication is to be opened by the Teachers College band. The national hymn then will be sung under the direction of Mr. Valentine. Prof. Felix Rothschild of the Junior High School will preside and will give a short discussion on the significance of this College and America in War and Peace.
Col. James E. Rieger, veteran of World War I will talk. There also is to be a guest speaker, for the dedication program.
Pres. Walter H. Ryle will give the dedication speech to be followed by the singing of the National Anthem. At 11:01 everyone will pause for the silent minute. This is to pay tribute to the men who lost their lives in the first World War and that also is the hour the Armistice was signed.
All defense groups in this country have been invited to appear in uniform or with organization crest. The Junior High and Greenwood students have been invited.
The service flag, which has been made by the College home economics department, is ten and one half feet long and four and one half feet long and four and one half feet wide. It is made of wool material, in red, white and blue. The border is red and the background for the stars is white and the stars are blue. At present there are 440 stars on the flag and it is arranged so that more can be added.
The stars are sewed on the flag by hand and although the names are not yet on the back of the stars they will be put there. At present there is not a gold star on the flag. The flag will temporarily have the initials K.S.T.C. on it, but if the space is needed for stars they will be removed.
This flag is the approximate size of the service flag made by the College for the first World War, except it is planned so there can be more stars placed on it than were on the other one. Mary Alice Mabry is chairman of the committee in charge of the flag, and all girls in the Home Economics department have worked on the flag. The flag will hang on Kirk Auditorium stage and be taken down only for addition of stars.
