STATE GROUP ELECTS DR. E. S. SMITH OF KIRKSVILLE.

[partially cut off by clip of above title] in the Spanish-American War, the mementos from an uncle, Rear Admiral John A. B. Smith.

A “LICENSED” SHIP PILOT.

Dr. Smith was commanding officer of the sanitary battallion, 102d division, in the World War.

Dr. Smith studied navigation at Georgetown university and received a pilot’s license for the Atlantic Coast. He navigated a power boat which carriied Missourians on a cruise by river and Great Lakes to New York a few years ago, distributing Missouri corncob pipes and other products along the way.

He is married and has one daughter, Miss Emily Smith, a graduate of the University of Missouri school of journalism.

“I’ve been president two years,” Dr. Bourke said last night, “and the position entails more work than I can give to it.”

He added that he expected to remain a member of the board until the expiration of his term.
