Coach King

Boyd King, who attended the Hannibal Public Schools, won 11 letters in football, basketball, and baseball at Truman State University. During World War II, he served as an ensign in the V-5 program as an assistant basketball coach at the University of North Carolina, and the pre-flight and head coach at the U. S. Naval School Virginia.

Emily Smith and Boyd King tied knots on April 17, 1938. After 8 years of their marriage, Mr. King began his coaching career at Truman State University.

Coach Boyd was appointed head basketball coach at the university. He coached the Bulldogs for 25 years until his retirement at the end of the 1970-71 season.

Boyd’s teams compiled a cumulative record of 380-199 and were conference champions seven times. In 1970-71, Coach King was named College-Division District Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Boyd was also a recipient of a merit award for distinguished services from that association. Boyd continued to teach in the Division of Health and Physical Education until his retirement in 1977.
