Depero Futurista

by Fortunato Depero (1892 – 1960)

The bolted book contains text printed in red and black in a variety of geometrical shapes, large lettering, vertical pagination, mirrored or oblique designs and symbols. The most exciting aspect of the bolted book is the ability of the reader to rearrange the pages. The bolts in the book are designed to be opened, the pages rearranged, and re-bolted or reassembled to change the order of the pages in the book. The book allows for each viewer to create a personal and unique experience of the book.

Depero Futurista is known as the Bolted Book (Libro Imbullonato) because of its iconic two industrial bolt binding. This book is part of the Special Collections Rare Book collection. Depero Futurista was designed by Italian Futurist artist, Fortunato Depero (1892-1960). The book was published in 1927 and is regarded as a milestone in futurist book production and a fundamental works on Italian futurism. The book contains fourteen different typefaces designed by Depero.

The futurism movement was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. The movement was popularized by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. The art aimed to capture dynamism and the increasingly fast, technological, and violent energy of a world inching towards the first World War. Artists in the movement used repetition, spirals, and blurring to display movement. Futurism soon became associated with Fascism as both movements had glorified war, extreme nationalism, and violence.
