As a young boy, his family moved to Davis County, Iowa, where he spent the rest of his childhood.\u00a0In 1866, Samuel moved to Kirksville, Missouri, to attend North Missouri Normal School. After graduating, he joined the school&#8217;s faculty as an instructor, and taught until 1873.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/exhibits.truman.edu\/picklers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2023\/02\/SamPickler-1.jpg\" alt=\"SamPickler\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"2226\" width=\"1282\" title=\"SamPickler\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>After the 1924 campus fire at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (formerly North Missouri Normal School), Samuel donated $25,000 towards the construction of a new library, prompting the Board of Regents to name the building in his honor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alongside being an educator, Samuel was the owner of multiple local businesses, including the <em>Kirksville Journal<\/em> and a dry goods store. He also pursued a career in politics as he served in the Missouri State Legislature four times, and as the Mayor of Kirksville.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/exhibits.truman.edu\/picklers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2023\/02\/1908-Pickler-Sam-Ida-e1676054774528.jpg\" alt=\"1908-Pickler-Sam-Ida\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"888\" width=\"1326\" title=\"1908-Pickler-Sam-Ida\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>In 1898, Samuel married Ida Fowler, and the two remained living in Kirksville, Missouri.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tThe Pickler House\n\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/exhibits.truman.edu\/picklers\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2023\/02\/1900-Pickler-home-e1676054657721.jpg\" alt=\"1900-Pickler-home\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1236\" width=\"1692\" title=\"1900-Pickler-home\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<p>In the 1880&#8217;s, Samuel Pickler constructed his house on S. Franklin Street, Kirksville. It was dubbed &#8220;The Castle,&#8221; and has a distinct round turret.
