The translation and transcription of this Book of Hours is provided by Ms. Lauren Milburn. While previous sections were maintained to be exactly as they were prepared – this section has a correction made in 89v. Text was removed from 90r that belonged to 89v. This correction has been placed in italics to denote this change.<\/strong><\/p>

Primarily the text of this book of hours is written in a brown ink, but the directions for the user were written in blue and red ink which has also included in the translation and transcription. These directions occur when a part of the text was to be not prayed during a certain liturgical season.<\/p>

[4]<\/a> Barnabas was an Apostle. Born in Cyprus he was the cousin of Saint Mark. According to sources he gave the Apostles the money he made after selling his home. He traveled to Antioch at the request of the Apostles and was the companion of Saint Paul in Cyprus. The Greeks think that Barnabas went to Rome to spread the Gospel and the Jews stoned him to death.\u00a0 He is the patron saint of Cyprus. [5]<\/a> These are the male children two years old and under killed by King Herod at the time of Christ\u2019s birth. They are considered martyrs in the church because they \u201cdied in Christ\u2019s stead.\u201d The day of their execution is not determined and the exact number of children murdered ranges from 14,000-64,000 based upon different sources. They converted many people to Christianity by refusing to accept payment from the poor. They were imprisoned during the persecution of Diocletian and they were beheaded in 303 AD. A basilica was erected in their honor by Pope Symmachus (d. 514) in Rome. They were the last two individuals to be added to the Canon of the Mass and their names are commemorated daily.\u00a0 They are the patron saints of druggist, physicians, barbers, and dentists. Their feast day is 26 Sept. Ibid, 240.<\/div>\n

[7]<\/a> There is a legend that states that Gervasius and Protasius were twin brothers born to Saints Vitalis and Valeria. After their parents\u2019 martyrdom, they were executed when Roman general Astasius came to Milan in 166 AD during the campaign of Marcomanni. Astasius arrested many other Christians at this time. There are many tales regarding the finding and preserving of their relics. Their true relics are said to be found under the high alter at Saint Ambrose basilica.\u00a0 Their feast day is 19 June. [8]<\/a> Saint Nicolas of Myra was the bishop of Myra in the 4th<\/sup> century. However, that remains to be the only historical fact surrounding his life. Legend holds that he was capable of performing miracles since his early childhood and that his election as bishop was in itself miraculous. He was apparently imprisoned during the persecution of Diocletian until the time of Constantine. He died 6 December between the years 345-52. His relics are now at the crypt of St. Nico in Bari. His bones are said to have liquid flowing from them with healing powers. He is the patron saint of Russia, Apulia, Lorraine, and Limerick and of sailors and merchants. [11]<\/a> Saint Lucy is a virgin martyr born 283 AD in Syracuse. Lucy was of noble birth and educated as a Christian. She took the vow of chastity and she donated her dowry to the poor. Governor Paschasius denounced her as a Christian and S. Lucy underwent many tortures.\u00a0 After much suffering and several miracles S. Lucy was executed by the sword. She is the patron saint of eyes, throats, and epidemic diseases. Her feast day is 13 Dec. Pre-Congregation. \n[12]<\/a> Saints Faith, Hope, and Charity were the daughters of Saint Sophia. Their story is more the subject of legend than of history. However, their story takes place in Rome where they lived under the rule of Hadrian. Ss. Faith, aged 12 was thrown into molten pitch and beheaded. Hope, aged 10 and Charity, aged 9 were thrown into the furnace. Untouched by the flames they were then beheaded. They were buried on the Via Aurelia and their relics are now in S.
